Diagnostic Instrument Manipulator
A Diagnostic Instrument Manipulator (DIM) is provided on three port locations (0-0, 90-315, 90-078) for inserting diagnostics to diagnose a target experiment on NIF. The DIM is a two-stage telescoping system that provides for positioning of the diagnostic package and enables the exchange of diagnostics for different experiments.
Target and Diagnostic Manipulators (TANDMs) are single-stage positioners that can be configured to handle either a target manipulator to position targets, or as a diagnostic manipulator to position insertable diagnostics. Due to TAS access line-of-sight considerations, only one of the two (TANDM 90-348) is configured to be used as a target positioner.
For more information on DIM and designing diagnostics for DIM, see Section 6.3. For more information on TANDM-based target manipulators, see section 5.4.1. For more information about TANDM diagnostic handling capability, see sections 5.4.3 and 6.3.
