Direct Laser Impulse (DLI) is a new capability on NIF that picks off two NIF beams and converts them to green to interact with targets as overlapped full beams. There is no focusing involved in DLI. The target and the beams interact in a standalone target chamber adjacent to the main NIF Target Chamber. The system is used to understand laser interaction with surfaces over large areas.
